When selecting a jiu jitsu gi, comfort and durability are key. The material of the gi is usually made from cotton or a cotton-poly blend, which affects its weight. Lightweight gis (around 350-450 GSM) are ideal for hot climates or competition as they allow greater movement and help keep you cool. Heavier gis (500+ GSM) are more durable and ideal for rigorous training, as they withstand wear and tear better.

Fit is also essential—your gi should not be too tight or too loose. Most gis come pre-shrunk, but it’s still good to check sizing charts and consider potential shrinking after washing. Look for reinforced stitching at stress points like the collar, sleeves, and pants to ensure your gi lasts longer. Ultimately, your gi should allow flexibility while standing up to the rigors of jiu jitsu training.
